🚦 목적의 부사절 : so that vs in order that

 

 

★ 목적 부사절 :  so that  vs  in order that 

 

 

 

so가 that을 만나면 

 

이전 포스트에서 다룬  '너무 ~해서 ~하다'라는 표현을 하고 싶을 때 쓸 수 있는 원인·결과 부사절 (so+형용사/부사+that)이 되거나

 

목적의 부사절이 될 수 있다. 

 

 

일단 아래 주어진 문장에 해당하는 표현을 영작해 보자. 

 

'네가 점심으로 먹을 수 있게 샌드위치를 만들었어.'

 

• I made a sandwich for your lunch. 
• I made a sandwich for you to eat for lunch. 

 

어떤 행동에 대한 목적을 표현하기 위해서는 

1. 전치사 for+명사/동명사를 활용하거나 
2. to 부정사를 활용할 수 있다. 

 

 

동일한 의미로 접속사를 활용해서 표현하면 다음과 같다. 

 

• I made a sandwich so that you could eat it for lunch. 

 

 

자 그럼 본격적으로  목적을 표현할 수 있는 부사절을 살펴보도록 하자. 

 

 

1️⃣  so that S+V 

1) '~하기 위해서'라고 해석하고 어떤 행동에 대한 목적을 나타낼 때 쓴다. 

 

2) 목적을 표현할 때 가장 일반적인 접속사이다. 

 

3) that에 조동사 will, can, may가 어울린다. (반드시 쓸 필요는 없다.)

 

4) that을 생략할 수 있다. 

 

• You had better bundle up so that you won't catch a cold. (감기에 걸리지 않기 위해 옷을 껴입는 게 좋겠어.)
• Everyone washes their hands as often as possible so that it helps get rid of germs or viruses. (모든 사람들이 세균이나 바이러스를 제거하는데 도움이 되게끔  최대한 손을 자주 씻는다.)
• Please keep the volume down so (that) I can concentrate on my reading. (책 좀 읽게 볼륨좀 낮춰 줘.)
• You can put some butter in it so that it adds a rich flavor. (풍부한 맛을 더하기 위해 버터를 조금 넣어도 돼.)
• I used to drink a lot of coffee  so that I would stay up all night. ( 밤에 잠을 자지 않기 위해 커피를 많이 마시곤 했지.)

 

 

 

2️⃣  in order that

1) so that에 비해 격식을 갖춘 표현에 적합하다. 

 

• You need to log in first in order that you will get the detailed information. (더 자세한 정보를 얻기 위해서는 로그인을 먼저 해야 한다.)
• I decided to write a book in order that I would share my own know-how with more people. (나만의 노하우를 더 많은 사람들과 공유하기 위해 책을 쓰기로 결심했다.)
• The food festival serves all different foods in order that anyone can enjoy whatever they want. (그 음식 축제는 누구라도 자신이 원하는 음식을 즐길 수 있도록 다양한 음식을 제공한다.)

 

 

 

부사절 말고도 to부정사를 활용해서 목적을 표현할 수 있다. 

🧭  in order to V / so as to V

 

 'to+동사원형' 만으로도 목적을 표현할 수 있지만 이러한 목적을 강조하기 위해 to 앞에 in order 또는 so as를 둘 수 있다. 

 

 

따라서, 

'나만의 노하우를 더 많은 사람들과 공유하기 위해 책을 쓰기로 결심했다.'라는 표현을 아래와 같이 다양하게 영작할 수 있다. 

 

• I decided to write a book so that I would share my own know-how with more people. 
• I decided to write a book in order that I would share my own know-how with more people. 
• I decided to write a book to share my own know-how with more people. 
• I decided to write a book so as to share my own know-know with more people.
• I decided to write a book in order to share my own know-know with more people.
