모양이 같은 eating의 쓰임에 유의해서 해석을 해 보자.

 

 

 

1. I love eating out with my family.
2. I'm eating out with my family. 

 

1번은 나는 내 가족과 외식하는 것을 좋아한다. 

2번은 나는 내 가족과 외식을 하고 있다.라고 해야 맞다. 

 

1번의 eating 어구는 love의 목적어 역할을 한 것이고, 

2번의 eating 어구는 현재분사로 진행형을 표현한 것이다. 

 

 

-ing 어구는 역할에 따라 전혀 다른 뜻을 갖는다.

 

 

동명사와 현재분사가 할 수 있는 각각의 역할을 떠올려 보자.

동명사는 결국 명사이고, 분사는 결국 형용사 또는 부사가 된다. 

 

따라서 동명사는 문장에서 없어서는 안 될 필수 요소(주어, 목적어, 보어)가 되어야 하므로 '~하는 것, 행위'로 해석을 해야 하고, 

 

현재 분사는 동작을 능동적으로 진행하고 있는 '~을 하고 있는'으로 해석을 해야 한다.
