아래의 문장에서 맞는 표현을 골라보자.

위에 제시한 문장의 정답은 다음과 같다. 

 

1. There were many tall buildings on both sides of the street. both + 복수 명사
2. There were many tall buildings on either side of the street. either + 단수 명사
3. There are two options, either of which I don't like. 부정어 (not) + either → '둘 다 아니다'
4. There are two options, both of which I don't like.  부정어 (not) + bother → '둘 다 그런 건 아니다'

 

 

both와 either를 사용할 때는 사람이든 사물이든 '둘'이 기준이 된다. 

 

 

 

 

또한 긍정문과 부정문에서  사용할 때 주의할 필요가 있다.

1️⃣   B O T H

 

★ 기본적인 뜻 : '둘 다'

 

1) 긍정문 : 둘 다

2) 부정문 : both를 부정문에 쓰는 것은 매우 어색하다. 굳이 의미를 풀어 보자면  '둘 다 ~하지는 않다 / 둘 중 하나만 ~하지 않다'는 부분 부정의 개념을 갖는다. 

 

 

★ 명사 : 주어, 목적어, 보어 역할

 

• Both of us have the same opportunity. (우리 둘 다 동일한 기회가 있어.) 주어
• She found two chocolate chip cookies and just ate both. (그녀는 초코칩 쿠키 두개를 발견한 뒤 먹어 버렸어.) 동사의 목적어
• Are both ok? (둘 다 괜찮은 거니?) 주어   
• Did you participate in both of the contests? (너는 두 대회 모두 참가한거니?)  전치사의 목적어

 

 

 

★ 형용사 : 명사 수식

 

• He put both hands on the head. (그는 두 손을 머리에 올려 놓았어.)  
• He put both his hands on the head. (그는 그의 두 손을 머리에 올려 놓았어.) both(전치 한정사)와 his(한정사) 둘 다 hands 수식 / 어순 유의 (his both X)

• Either is fine by me. (둘 중 어느 것이든 난 괜찮아.) 주어

★ 형용사 : 명사 수식

 

• His teacher wanted to talk to either parent. (그의 선생님은 부모 중 한 분과 면담을 원했어.)
• I tried on the two but I didn't like either hat. (나는 모자 두 개 모두 써봤지만 어느 것도 마음에 들지 않았어.) not과 결합해서 부정어

 

 

★ 부사 : 부정문에서 '~도 아니다' 

 

• She didn't show up and he didn't, either. (그녀는 나타나지 않았는데, 그도 마찬가지였어.) 부정문
• She showed up and he did, too. (그녀는 나타났고, 그도 또한 나타났어.) 긍정문
  

 

 

🧭 not + either = neither 

 

A : I slept very well last night.  (어젯밤 잠을 정말 잘 잤어.)
B : So did I. (나도 잘 잤는데.) = I slept very well, too.

A : I didn't sleep very well last night.  (어젯밤 잠을 잘 못 잤어.)
B : Neither did I. (나도 못 잤는데.) = I didn't sleep very well either. 

 

 

★ 등위 상관 접속사 : either A or B  'A와 B 둘 중 하나'로 A or B의 강조 표현

 

• We need to go with either what you like or what I like. (우리는 니가 좋아하는 것과 내가 좋아하는 것 둘 중 하나로 정해서 가야 해.)
