under, below, beneath, underneath, down

 

 

 

 

 

1️⃣  under  (↔ over)

'~아래에'라는 의미를 적용하는 가장 일반적인 전치사로 다음과 같은 다양한 용법으로 쓸 수 있다. 

 

 

⭐ ~의 아래에, 아래로 (=below)    

• It is believed that walking under the ladder brings bad luck. (사다리 밑으로 걸어가면 재수가 없다고 여긴다.)

 

 

⭐ (접촉해서 위를 가리거나 덮고 있는 것) 속에 (↔over)    under the coat / cover

• He put the gift for her under the coat. (그는 그녀에게 줄 선물을 코트 속에 숨겼다.)

 

 

⭐ (영향력, 통제) 하에    under the influence / control / threat / pressure / leadership / power

• I was under a lot of stress preparing for the speech. (강연을 준비하면서 엄청 스트레스를 받았다.)

 

 

⭐ ~사람 밑에(서), 직속으로, ~로 딸린, 제자로 

• Jake studied applied mathematics under professor Peterson. (Jake는 Peterson 교수 밑에서 응용수학을 공부했다.)

 

 

⭐ (상황, 조건)에 처한    under the circumstances / conditions 

• Gatherings of more than four people in an indoor space aren't allowed under any circumstances. (어떤 상황에서도 5인 이상 모임은 허락되지 않는다.)

 

 

⭐ (나이, 시간, 무게) ~미만의, 모자라는 (=less than)    under twelve 12세 미만

 

 

🧭 참고로 유의할 점은 시간과 무게 단위는 under, 높이와 온도는 below를 쓴다. 

• It took under 10 minutes to finish the dish. (그 요리를 완성하는데 채 10분도 안 걸렸다.)
• She has kept her weight under 50kg with a healthy diet. (그녀는 건강한 식이 요법으로 50kg 이하를 유지해왔다.)

 

 

⭐ (합의, 법률) ~에 따르면, 따라 (=according to)    under the law 

• The two countries established diplomatic relations under mutual agreement. (그 두 국가는 상호 합의하에 수교를 맺었다.)

 

 

⭐ (원래와 다른) ~라는 이름으로 (=under the name of)   

• He used to write detective novels under Mr. K. (그는 Mr. K라는 이름으로 탐정소설을 썼었다.)

 

 

⭐ ~진행 중인    under construction / discussion / consideration 공사중인/상의중인, 고려중인 

• The municipal Library under construction is scheduled to open in October. (공사중인 시립도서관은 10월에 오픈할 예정이다.)

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

2️⃣  below  (↔ above)

두 대상의 높이를 비교할 때 주로 쓰이고, 접촉해 있는 경우에는 쓰지 않는다. 

 

 

⭐ ~의 아래에

• Her hair was below her waistline. (그녀의 머리카락은 허리 아래까지 내려왔다.)

 

 

⭐ 숫자, 양, 수준, 기준, 평균, 통계치) ~미만의 (=less than), 아래의, 못 미치는  below zero / average / standard 

🧭 높이와 온도는 below, 시간과 무게 단위는 under를 쓴다. 

• Early in January, the temperature went down to ten degrees below zero for 5 days in a row. (1월 초에 연속해서 5일 동안이라 기온이 영하 10도 이하로 떨어졌다.) 
• Every student with scores under 60 needs to get a test again. (60점 미만인 학생은 재시험을 봐야 한다.)
• What they get paid is well below minimum wage. (그들이 받는 돈은 최저 임금에 훨씬 못 미친다.)
• Four-in-ten millennials, below  50%,  don't have their own houses. (밀레니얼 세대 중 10명 중 4명, 즉 50% 미만은 자기 집이 없다.)

 

 

⭐ (학년, 층수) 낮은, 아래층에 사는 (↔above)

• He and I went to the same high school and I was two years below him. (그와 나는 같은 학교에 다녔고 내가 그보다 2학년이 낮았다.) 
• He lives three floors below me. (그는 우리 집 3층 아래에 산다.)

 

 

 

 

3️⃣  beneath 

접촉의 개념이 강하며 문학적인 표현에 자주 등장한다. 

 

 

⭐ ~ 아래에 

• I felt something move beneath my feet. (발 밑에서 뭔가 움직이는 것을 느꼈다.)
• I could fly higher than an eagle because you are the wind beneath my wings. (너는 내 날개 밑의 바람이므로 나는 독수리보다 더 높이 날 수 있었어.) *wind beneath my wings 팝송 가사
• I found a two-dollar bill beneath the book. (나는 책 밑에서 2 달러 짜리 지폐를 발견했다.)

 

 

⭐ (수준, 기준) ~보도 못한, 못 미치는 (=below)

• No one thinks that it is beneath the dignity for a guy to do household chores. (그 누구도 남자가 집안일을 하는 것을 체면이 깎이는 일이라고 생각하지 않는다.)

 

 

⭐ (겉과 다르게 감춰진) 이면에

• You had better watch out for what lies beneath her beautiful smile. (그녀의 아름다운 미소 이면에 감춰진 것을 조심해야 한다.)

 

 

 

 

4️⃣  underneath 

 

⭐  바로 아래에, 아래로 

• We could take shelter from the rain underneath the roof. (우리는 지붕 밑에서 비를 피할 수 있었다.)

 

 

⭐ (어떤 물건의) 밑바닥에

• You can find a spare key underneath the flowerpot right next to the door. (문 바로 옆에 있는 화분 밑바닥에 여분의 열쇠가 있어요.)

 

 

 

 

5️⃣  down 

 

⭐ (위에서) 아래쪽으로 

• She couldn't stop tears from rolling down her face. (그녀는 흐르는 눈물을 주체할 수가 없었다.)

 

⭐ (어떤 지점에서) … 을 따라 (=along)

• There are nice cafes and restaurants down the street. (도로를 따라 멋진 카페와 식당이 있다.)

 

⭐ 남쪽으로   cf. up 북쪽으로 

• The expedition kept sailing down the east coast of the continent. (원정대는 그 대륙의 동부 해안을 따라 계속해서 항해했다.)
