영어에는 '~을 보다'라는 의미를 가진 단어와 숙어가 꽤 있다.  

 

신체 기관 중에서 눈을 이용해 보는 것이긴 하지만

 

보는 방식이나 상황에 따라 차이가 있기 때문에 맥락에 맞는 표현을 사용해야 한다.

1️⃣  see : (눈을 뜨고 있는 상태에서 눈에 들어오는 대상을) 보다, ~가 보인다

🧭 (동사의 불규칙 변화) see - saw - seen

 

• Can you see the numbers on the front? (앞면에 있는 숫자 보이니?)
• I saw a lot of people in the park. (공원에 사람들이 보였다/있었다.)
• Did you see what happened? (무슨 일이 일어났는지 봤니?)
• She closed her eyes and couldn't see anything. (그녀는 눈을 감았고 아무것도 볼 수 없었다.)
• We went to the beach to see the sunset. (우리는 일몰을 보러 해변에 갔다.)
• I don't see any difference between these two shirts. (나는 이 두 셔츠 사이에서 아무런 차이도 보지 못한다.)
• I'm trying to see if the store is open. (나는 그 가게가 열었는지 보려고 한다.)
• He was so tall that I couldn't see over his head. (그는 너무 키가 커서 나는 그의 머리 너머를 볼 수 없었다.)
• Do you see what I mean? (내 말이 무슨 뜻인지 알겠니? / 이해하니?)   
• I can’t see the screen clearly. (화면이 잘 안 보인다.)
• Do you see what I mean? (내가 무슨 말하는지 알겠어?)
• I saw him at the cafe earlier. (나는 아까 카페에서 그를 보았다.)
• She didn’t see the sign on the road. (그녀는 도로 표지판을 못 봤다.
• I see you’ve grown since last time. (지난번보다 네가 큰 게 보인다.)

2️⃣  look : '(어떤 방향으로 집중해서 ) 보다, 쳐다보다

🧭 at이라는 전치사는 목표물에 '겨냥'하는 뉘앙스가 있다. 

     

• Look over there. (저기 좀 봐.)
• Look both ways before you cross. (길 건너기 전에 양쪽을 다 봐.)
• Look, the train is coming! (봐, 기차 온다!)
  
• He looked out the window at the falling snow. (그는 내리는 눈을 보려고 창밖을 봤다.)
• She looked away when I called her name. ( 내가 이름 부르자 그녀가 시선을 돌렸다.)
• Look at the balloons! (저 풍선 좀 봐!)
• She looked at him with mild disappointment. (그녀는 살짝 실망한 채로 그를 바라보았다.)
• Please look at the camera and smile. (카메라를 보고 웃어주세요.)
  
• Why are you looking at me like that? (왜 나를 그렇게 쳐다봐?)
• The children looked for their lost toy everywhere. (아이들은 잃어버린 장난감을 모든 곳에서 찾았다.) *look for ~을 찾다
• Look at the beautiful painting! (저 아름다운 그림을 봐!)
• He looked me straight in the eyes. (그는 내 눈을 똑바로 쳐다봤다.)
• Can you look after my dog? (내 강아지 좀 돌봐줄래?) *look after ~을 돌보다
• Look up the word in the dictionary. (사전에서 그 단어를 찾아봐.)  *look sth up ~을 찾아보다

3️⃣  watch : (처음부터 끝까지 계속해서) 보다, 지켜보다

🧭 영화나 운동 경기 등을 시청하거나 어떤 동작이 이루어지는 걸 계속 보는 것

 

• Watch out! (조심해!)
• I'll watch your dog while you're out. (니가 외출할 때 내가 강아지 봐줄게.)
• So many people are watching the opening ceremony. (수많은 사람들이 개막식을 지켜보고 있어.)
• I like to watch movies on Friday nights. (나는 금요일 밤에 영화를 보는 것을 좋아한다.)
• Let's watch the football game together. (우리 같이 축구 경기를 보자.)
• She spent the afternoon watching the birds in the garden. (그녀는 정원의 새들을 지켜보며 오후를 보냈다.)
• Be careful! Watch out for that car! (조심해! 저 차를 조심해서 봐!)
• My cat loves to watch the fish in the aquarium. (우리 고양이는 수족관의 물고기를 보는 것을 아주 좋아한다.)
• He stood there watching the waves crash on the shore. (그는 거기 서서 파도가 해변에 부딪치는 것을 지켜봤다.)
• I often watch documentaries to learn new things. (나는 새로운 것을 배우기 위해 다큐멘터리를 자주 본다.)
• Can you watch my bag for a minute while I go to the restroom? (화장실 가는 동안 내 가방 좀 잠깐 봐줄 수 있어?)
• They were watching the kids play in the park. (그들은 아이들이 공원에서 노는 것을 지켜보고 있었다.)
