Big Little Lies was written by Liane Moriarty in 2014. I didn't know who she was or how famous she was until I read it but it turned out that she is one of the most popular American writers. 

 

One of the interesting things about this story is it is definitely a mystery genre but more of a real drama based on the reality anyone could go through and face. In the center of the plot is a murder case, which underlies and leads the whole story but just plays a background resource from which real stories of three main characters develop deeply and in detail with individual and common events. It's another page-turner with lots of practical expressions good for English learners and I loved it so much. The book was so popular that it turned into a television series and made a  great success. I haven't yet watched it but do like the casting for each character, Reese Witherspoon as Madeline Mackenzie, a lovely woman of justice who likes dolling herself up even in her forties and cares a lot about her friends, Nicole Kidman as Celeste Wright, an impeccable beauty who seems to have a perfect life but are being physically abused by her husband, and Shailene Woodley as Jane Chapman who lives as too young a single mom and suffers from the self-remorse from a one-night stand with a guy who leaves such a traumatic scar on her with abusive words and such a big lie. Personally, I like stories with a variety of characters in any shoes in which I could put myself. It does suit me in that sense and I recommend you give it a try. It's more than worth it! ^^ 

 

It also helps learn practical expressions because every event is all about our realities happening at home, at school,  at the cafe, and about things of a couple, friends, parents and children, school-especially bullying- etc. They are all real! 

 

 

Madline, Celeste, Jane, 이 주인공들은  저마다의 말 못 할 가정사를 갖고 있다. 이로 인해 그들은 모두 트라우마를 겪게 되고 그 과정에서 우연히 살인 사건이 발생한다. 이 사건은 이 소설을 이끄는 중심축이지만 살인 사건 자체를 다룬다기보다 그 안에 얽히고설켜 결국 살인 사건으로 귀결될 수밖에 없는 현실,  우리 일상에서 누구라도 겪게 되는 보편적인 주제를 반전을 더해 너무도 흥미롭게 그려내고 있다. 

 

이 소설을 영어 학습용으로 추천하고 싶은 포인트는 일단 따옴표가 들어간 대화체가 많아서 구어 표현을 익히기에 좋다.

 

또한 엄마, 아빠, 친구, 학교, 카페 등 우리 일상을 대변하는 친숙한 소재들로 넘쳐 나기 때문에 바로 현실에서 사용할 수 있을 것 같은 실용적인 표현을 익힐 수 있다는 것이다.

(Chloe가 오리엔테이션에서 다른 애들한테 좀 아는 척을 하는 동안(그녀의 주 특기는 바로 우두머리 기질이고, 언젠가는 회사를 운영하게 될 것이 틀림없다.), Madeline은 친구인 Celeste와 커피를 마시러 가려고 했다.)

• It was a sad indictment of Jane's mundane life that she'd found the whole incident just a little bit thrilling. (Jane이 그 사건 전말을 통해 약간의 스릴을 느꼈다는 것은 그녀의 삶이 지극히 평범했다는 것을 말해주었다.)
