Paul Auster is a famous American writer and I've been a big fan of him for so long since my mid 20s.  His stories never bore me. Page turners always make me feel sorry to find there's not so many pages left to enjoy as I turn more pages. 

 

 

I get easily addicted with any story of his.  The latest one I'm reading is '4 3 2 1', which is a coming-of-age story. The author is over 70 years old but it's amazing that he could still write a story in a boy's perspective.  I think a couple of predominant motifs in his works are father, solitude, and alienation but what makes me really intrigued about all his stories is that they develop, whatever motif the author touches, in unexpected chains of accidents. I'm not sure if he does mean to or not but he must be such a story teller. 

 

4 3 2 1 is a thick book with almost one thousand pages. Oh, dear!  Still I recommend that you can give it a try on one of his less thick copies. They are worth reading  as the one who loves reading novels.

🚕   haggle over prices    가격을 흥정하다

• She was barred from entering certain local shops because of her vociferous haggling over prices. (그녀는 큰 소리로 가격 흥정을 해대서 몇몇 지역 상점은 그녀의 출입을 금지시켰다.)

 

 

🚛   fetching   멋진, 매력적인

• So pretty she was, Ferguson's mother, so fetching with her gray-green eyes and long brown hair, ~~  (그녀, Ferguson의 어머니는 매우 예쁘고, 갈색빛이 도는 초록색 눈과 긴 갈색 머리도 너무 매력적이었지만, ~~ )

 

🚙   on the make    돈을 노리는, 이익을 추구하는

• Benjy Adler was a man on the make who always hogged the center of attention. (Benjy Adler는 언제나 사람들의 관심을 독차지해서 이익을 노리고자 하는 사람이었다.)

 

 

🚜   also-ran     (특히 시합·선거 등의) 낙오자 

• She was no more than an also-ran when compared to her sister. (그녀는 언니와 비교했을 때 더 이상 낙오자가 아니었다.)

 

 

🚖   stand up for oneself    자립하다, 남에게 좌우되지 않다

• What Rose wanted, and what Rose belonged to, was the real world, the rush and clamor of the New York streets, the sense of standing up for herself and making her own way.  (Rose가 원했던 것 그리고  속했던 것은  현실 세계였고, New York 거리의 분주함과 소란스러움이었으며, 자립해서 출세하는 감각이었다.

• The small radio-repair shop started in 1932 had growned into a sizable furniture-appliance store on Springfield Avenue that featured all the lures and gimmicks of contemporary American retail. (1932년에 작은 라디오 수리점으로 시작해서 Springfield  Avenue에 제법 규모가 있는, 그 당시 미국 소매상의 온갖 상술이 판을 치던 가구 가전 매장으로 성장했다. )

• American retail: long-term installment plans, buy-two-get-one-free offers, semi-annual blowout sales, a newlywed consultation service, and Flag Day specials. (미국 소매상점: 장기 할부, 두 개 사면 덤으로 하나 더 주는 행사, 반년마다 있는 파격 세일, 신혼부부 상담 서비스, 그리고 Flag Day(성조기 제정 기념일) 특가) 

 

 

🛺    have a rough go of  ~  힘든 경험을 하다, 재수가 없다

• Arnold had been the first to come in with him, the blundering, not-too-bright middle brother who had lost several jobs in sales and was having a rough go of it trying to support his wife, Joan, and their their three kids (영업 분야 일자리를  몇 차례나 잃고, 아내인 Joan과 세 아이를 부양하느라 힘든 시간을 겪고 있던 실수투성이에, 그리  사리에 밝지도 않은 중년의 형인 Arnold가 그와 가장 먼저 합류했다.)

 

 

🚚  flich   좀도둑질하다

• His two failed siblings expressed their gratitude to him by repeatedly showing up late for work, filching tens and twenties from the cash register taking off to play golf after lunch. (그의 두 실패한 형제들은 그에게 감사함을 표하면서도 매번 매장에 늦게 나타났고,  점심을 먹고 나면 현금출납기에서 10 내지 20달러를 꺼내 골프를 치러 가곤 했다.)

 

 

🚖  The best days were still to come   앞으로 더 잘 나가다, 성공하다

• Stanley wasn't a rich man yet, but for some time now his income had been growing steadily, and when he met Rose on that October night in 1943, he was certain the best days were still to come. (Stanley는 부자는 아니었지만 그 때만해도 꾸준히 수입이 증가하고 있었고, 1943년 10월 어느 밤에 Rose를 만나던 날, 그의 앞날은 승승장구할 거란 확신에 차 있었다.)

 

 

 

🚎  wisecrack  재치있는 말, 농담

• It was Nancy Fein who set up the blind date for her with Stanley, caustic, wise-cracking Nancy of the big teeth and skinny arms, who had been Rose's best friend since their childhood days together in Crown Heights. (Stanley와 소개팅을 주선한 Nancy는 빈정대는 농담을 잘하는  아이로 이는 크고, 팔이 가늘었으며 Crown Heights에서 함께 어린 시절을 보낸 Rose의 절친이었다. )
