2021년 1월 20일,   Washington D.C.에 있는 the U.S. Capitol(국회 의사당)에서 열린 제46대 대통령 취임식은 Joe Biden 대통령과 Kamala Harris 부통령의 4년 임기를 공식 인정하는 행사로 올해로 59째 취임식이다.  

 

Biden은 78세로 역대 최고령의 대통령이며, Harris는 미국 역사상 최초로 여성이자, 흑인 및 아시아계(자메이카 출신 아버지와 인도 출신 어머니) 부통령이다. 

 

코로나 여파와 더불어  극우 트럼프 지지자들의 국회의사당 습격 사건으로 정국이 불안한 상황에서, 거대하고 화려했던 기존 취임식과달리 방역 조치에 따른 참가 인원을 제한한 것은 물론 그 어느 때보다 테러 및 소요 사태를 우려해 보안에 만전을 기한 행사였다. 

 

Biden 대통령의 취임사의 특징을 한마디로 정리하자면 '통합(unity)'이라고 할 수 있다. 

지난 대선이후 민주당과 공화당의 지지 세력 양분 현상이 더욱 심화되었고 기존에 잠재되어 있던 양극화의 폐단이 코로나 사태를 통해 더욱더 극명하게 드러남에 따라 분열된 민심과 정치 세력을 통합하고 화합해야 한다는 절체절명의 위기감에서 비롯된 것이라 보인다.
